Dubbo Community Aboriginal Plan
Dubbo Aboriginal Community Strategy 2006-2020
“Community & Families Working with Government to Shape the Future”
This Plan arises from work done by the Dubbo Aboriginal Community Working Party (DACWP) over the last three years (2003 -2006).
The DACWP seeks to provide a unified voice for the indigenous people in Dubbo. While there is a common Aboriginal background in this area, many people come from different cultures and family traditions. There are up to 57 Aboriginal Communities represented in Dubbo at any one time. DACWP offers a unity voice for many different families and Aboriginal Cultures. This is very important because smaller groups often feel isolated and powerless in a wider affluent community.
The DACWP is not a group which manages or delivers service programs. It’s role is to listen to the community and express and support community thinking.
In developing the Plan, DACWP is building on:
-
Experience in sharing ideas within the community
-
Groups on the Gordon Estate working together with DACWP to address community issues
-
Protocols being prepared to ensure that the DACWP remains broadly representative into the future
-
Funds provided to assist the DACWP to develop an indigenous vision for Dubbo which will link into the wider community planning and will involve the whole community
-
DACWP sees a growing sense of empowerment in the Aboriginal community. The Working Party believe it can contribute for positive change by working with the Aboriginal community and participating in planning with the wider community and Government in Dubbo
-
The DACWP have committed to five key strategies which will be carried out through partnerships between community and government.
Strategy 1: Build cultural pride in the Aboriginal communities in Dubbo and strengthen understanding of indigenous cultures in the city as a whole
Strategy 2: Secure safe, long term, good quality accommodation for Aboriginal families, where they have a sense of control and self determination.
Strategy 3: Progressively improve education outcomes for young people over a 15 year time frame.
Strategy 4: Progressively improve health outcomes and reduce long term health risks over a1 5 year time frame.
Strategy 5: Progressively improve employment opportunity for aboriginal young people in Dubbo over a 15 year time frame.
